Got questions? Here's the real deal

What’s the difference between developmental editing, copy editing, and proofreading?

Developmental editing: Big picture. Fixes the story, structure, pacing, characters, plot holes. Like tearing a house down to rebuild it better.

Copy editing: Line-by-line polish. Fixes grammar, sentence flow, word choice, consistency, and clarity. Makes the house look clean and sharp.

Proofreading: Final check. Catches typos, punctuation errors, and formatting issues. Like wiping smudges off the windows before selling the house.

I break it down into 4 steps:

  • First Round (Developmental Edit): You send me your full manuscript or chunks of chapters. I focus on big-picture changes and leave comments/suggestions for you.
  • Beta Edit: Once you’ve made changes based on my comments, I go back through the story for a deeper dive, refining the narrative, pacing, and character arcs.
  • Line Edit: Here, I fine-tune your writing, tightening up sentences, fixing awkward phrasing, and polishing the overall language.
  • Final Proofreading: The last step before publication — I comb through the manuscript to fix any grammar, spelling, or punctuation issues.
You can send it all at once, or in chunks — whatever works best for you. If you prefer to send it piece-by-piece, I’ll work through it chapter by chapter.
That’s totally fine. If you just want proofreading or copy editing, we can skip the developmental round and focus on the specific service you need. I’ll guide you based on where you are in the writing process.

It depends on the length of your manuscript and the depth of the work. On average:

  • Developmental editing: 2-3 weeks
  • Copy editing: 1-2 weeks
  • Proofreading: 1 week
I provide a clear quote based on the length of your manuscript and the type of editing you need. We’ll discuss the details up front, so you know exactly what to expect.
Absolutely. Whether you need developmental editing for the first few chapters or just proofreading for the final draft, I can customize the services to fit your needs.
Once the first round is done (developmental or beta edit), you’ll get feedback and suggestions. You’ll make your changes, then I’ll review it again in the second round to refine everything. We’ll keep improving until your manuscript is the best it can be.
Once I’ve finished the editing process, you’ll get a clean, polished manuscript ready for publication. If you want to make further changes after that, we can discuss what’s needed, but the manuscript will be fully edited by then.
